Malung
A thrilling combination of nature and culture awaits you in Malung. The destination is close to the mountains, forests and water. Malung offers a wealth of memorable experiences, in both summer and winter. Experience the annual dance band festival, classic Skinnarspelet theatrical performance and the region’s leather heritage, untamed wilderness, deep forests and roaring rivers.
Malung is beautifully situated on the Västerdal river. The deep valley forests provide endless opportunities to fish, cycle and hike in varied, exciting landscapes. During the winter months, cross-country skiing is a popular activity, whether you’re training for a ski race or just want to enjoy the stunning surroundings.
As well as the natural experiences it offers, Malung is also known for its rich cultural life. Throughout history, handcrafts, in particular leathercrafts, have been an important part of the region’s identity. Long-established leather manufacturers and tanneries still exist today. Every summer the classic ’Skinnarspelet”, a theatrical and musical performance based around the region’s proud tanning history, is performed at midsummer.
Dansbandsveckan, a week-long festival of music and dance, is another summer highlight. Each year in July a host of enthusiasts make the pilgrimage to Orrskogens Folkets park in Malung to enjoy the music, dancing and atmosphere. Amateurs and pros alike jitterbug, foxtrot, swing, lindy hop and more, accompanied by the best traditional dance bands from Sweden and Scandinavia.
