The church is beautifully and centrally located in Avesta, next to Dalälven and Koppardalen. The current church tower was built in 1851-52. The most recent renovation, inside and out, was carried out in 2003.
Construction of the church began in 1651 and in 1655 the church could be consecrated. The outside of the church was complete, but much work remained on the inside. In September 1803, a violent fire ravaged Avesta when the church was also damaged. The church's tower and outer roof were destroyed, as was its free-standing belfry with bells. The outer walls and vaults, however, survived. The current church tower was built in 1851-52
