Flatenbergs hut

Well-preserved mining hut with roasting furnace, council house, and blast furnace. The village Flatenberg was mentioned as early as the 14th century. A hut was established around the year 1600 by miners. The hut had a favorable location as Norra Barken Lake could be used as a transport route year-round.

The current blast furnace was built through an addition to the old one in 1865. During this time, a series of improvements took place. A modern roasting oven was constructed, a steam engine was installed, and production increased from 1,600 to 3,000 tons of pig iron. The engine house still contains several older machines, such as ore crushers and blowers. However, the furnace faced the slump that occurred after World War I, and operations ceased in 1918. The environment was already considered so interesting in the 1920s that several extensive documentations were made. The author Karl-Erik Forsslund believed that this miner's environment was the most remarkable that existed in Sweden. When the furnace was about to be demolished in 1930, Forsslund managed to declare it a museum because it contained and still contains a large collection of tools. In this way, it was preserved, although it was not possible to save the eight coal houses or parts of the miner's village. The town hall and roasting oven bridge have been reconstructed. In the area, there is a marked hiking trail to explore on your own. Flatenbergs Hytta is an environment within Ekomuseum Bergslagen.
