Hemtjärns Nature Reserve consists mainly of deciduous forests of different ages.
The area is located on the sediment plateau adjacent to the nipa and the river bed just south of Bäsna. The greater part of the area has been shown in the Swedish Forest Service's inventory to be classed as a key biotope.
The trees mostly consist of aspen, birch and gray alder. Dead wood is abundant, both standing and lying like flames. This provides good conditions for the occurrence of wood fungi and lichens. The reserve also includes the water area out to the middle of the main channel.
Hemtjärn is old freehold land that had previously been farmed. Hemtjärn is easily accessible via the road to the bathing area in Hemtjärn, which continues further up Gråheden.
