The Kullen fire tower

Kullberget's highest peak has always been an excellent vantage point. In the past, the Walpurgis bonfire was lit here and it could be seen for miles around.

In the early 1940s, forest companies, including Billerud, which owned a lot of forest around here, began to expand a fire surveillance system. They built guard towers in high places around the forests, and there was one at the top of Kullberget. At Slaktar-August Andersson in Kullen there was a stand from a wind generator that could be used. This tripod was originally 17 meters high, but the top was removed and the tripod was moved to the top of Kullberget. Billerud had employees who were special fire guards and who patroled the area during the day. If they saw any smoke developing, they had to run down to the forester's residence (the farm just below the tower) to call for help. A common cause of fire was sparks from the trains. In 1959, the wood was replaced because it had become rotten. However, the need for fire towers quickly decreased due to the expansion of fire aircraft, and around 1960 the era was over. Nyhammar's UFO association used the tower for a number of years around 1980 for its reconnaissance and then replaced the wood on the upper floors. The tower then continued to deteriorate and as it became overgrown in a dense forest, the view also decreased. When the forest around the top of Kullberget was felled a few years ago, the view at Kullen returned. The villagers rediscovered "their" tower, and with a grant from the King Gustav VI Adolf Foundation for Swedish Culture, the tower has now been renovated.
