Kvarnstensquet Östra Utsjö 4.5 km

Hike in one of Sweden's largest millstone quarries with water-filled mine holes, moss-covered scrapstone warps and leftover millstone blanks.

Start and end location: Östra Utsjö, Malung. Length: 4.5 km. Trail markings: There are signs in the area. Time required: 1-2 hours. Difficulty:The terrain is varied, with a high slope at times. Within the Millstone Quarry, it is rocky and difficult to access in some parts (especially in the northern part). Environment: The cultural reserve Kvarnstensbrottet in Östra Utsjö is beautifully situated in the forest just outside the centre of Malung. Here you can see the remains of Malung's first industry, millstone carving. The farmers in the surrounding villages carved millstones out of the rock for further sale out into the country, a sale that lasted from the Viking Age until 1880. The quarry is divided into the northern and southern parts, where the southern part differs from the northern part as the forest has been allowed to grow up and will soon be old-growth forest, i.e. forest that is over 120 years old. Throughout the quarry there are abundant piles of warp mounds from the millstone industry, as well as open pit mines, of which those in the southern part are filled with water. The millstone quarry is one of Sweden's largest. In the area, you can see clear traces of the activity that has been going on for a long time. A new road has been built that makes it easy to get there by car. In the area there is a parking lot, hiking trails, information signs and a reception facility with a barbecue area. The millstone quarry has been protected as a cultural reserve since 2003. Visit Dalarna is not responsible for the trail or its maintenance.
