Norra Transtrandsfjällen has been known and used as an outdoor area for a long time. It is directly connected to several large mountain tourist facilities.
The nature reserve consists of rounded mountain peaks such as Stor-Närfjället, Synddalskläppen, Östra Granfjället, and Öjskogsfjället, including bare mountain tops (kalfjäll) and forested slopes. The most significant natural values are found in the forested areas.
The reserve is crisscrossed by several mountain trails, including the Southern King's Trail (Södra Kungsleden) and connecting trails from Tandådalen. It is used for activities such as dog sledding and snowmobile safaris.
Avalanches serve as natural disturbances on steep mountain slopes and can cause significant changes. Other disturbances include snowbreak and ice scorch.
Several mountain farms (fäbodar) are within the reserve, remnants of past land use. While many mountain farms are now in decay, fäbod farming has been resumed at Öjskogsfjällstäkten since 2003. Traces of historical land use are evident in the form of tree carvings along trails and places used for grazing and mowing.
The nature reserve is located in the northern part of the Sälen Mountains, north of Hundfjället and Tandådalen, approximately 15 km northwest of Sälen village.
