The type of ecosystem found here, typically heavily influenced by human activity, is important for many species and is underrepresented in the nature reserves of Dalarna.
The area is characterized by greenstone in the bedrock and permeating water, creating a rich environment. The moist slope from the heights of Sönnberget and Byberget results in high soil moisture, ranging from drier areas to swampy forest sections. Predominantly a deciduous-rich spruce forest and the presence of greenstone create high natural values in the form of a contiguous spruce forest. This forest, characterized by trees of different ages and abundant deadwood, is relatively unaffected by modern forest management.
The proximity of the area to Säl's summer pasture farms shows historical tracesfrom grazing domestic animals. Additionally, the water sources above the reserve have been utilized as a water supply for the Bröttjärna village, partially encompassing the reserve.
